Meningitis is an infection of the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain. It is a characteristically excruciating condition, causing intense headaches, a stiff neck, and sensitivity to light and sound. Those who have cochlear implants may have inner ear anatomic abnormalities that may increase their risk for meningitis.
Vaccinations are available and recommended for individuals with cochlear implants because of this increased risk for meningitis. Our Ear Nose & Throat specialists can help you determine whether a cochlear implant is correct for you or your child, and can take care of the proper vaccinations to ensure that you are as healthy as possible after your surgery. Please call us for a consultation if you have experienced hearing loss, or are considering this procedure.
